Kristi n and Family: please accept my condolences. I was privileged to be among Russ' first law clerks at the Minnesota Supreme Court. It was a wonderful year working with as fine a jurist as I've met. I quickly learned that his "I'm just a country Judge from the 9th" bit was just a bit. He was a man of keen intellect combined with a quest for justice. It would be impossible to detail all I learned from him, but during my time as a referee I would frequently remember telling me, "Kevin, as a judge, you can rule or lecture but you shouldn't do both." My times visiting his evidence class were joyous; he loved teaching and was so gracious in his approach. Mostly though I will remember his stories about family. Family was first and foremost to Russ and that never escaped a conversation: he asked about my family and proudly talked about his. My condolences on your loss. I'm grateful for the time I spent with him.

Russ and I we’re appointed as district judges in 1976. He became a giant in Minnesota justice, raising to the role of Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. Yet he ever forgot his roots. He respected the role of the trial judge. Rest In Peace my friend

Kristin and family,
I have many fond memories of Russ and your family working for Court Administration in Crookston. Russ was a very wise man and had many stories to share. He also told me that the best advocate for your children is you as a parent. I never forgot that. I have thought about all of you over the years. I'm sorry to hear of his passing and want you to know my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I was one of the lawyers in Judge Anderson’s very first civil jury trial as a new judge in Crookston. When the trial was over he asked us how he did. Realizing that he had a good sense of humor I told him that there were a few minor mess-ups but for the most part he did well. He laughed. After he became Chief Justice, addressing large groups of lawyers and judges, I heard him recall that conversation with a chuckle.
Russ was a very good lawyer, a very good judge and a very good Chief Justice. Most of all he was a good man and very approachable. We will miss him, and I offer my heartfelt condolences to his family.
