Minneapolis cemeteries provide a unique view of the past

Many of Minneapolis' most noteworthy cemeteries were originally built to be a drive (or, at least, a horse-ride) away. Now, these cemeteries are our neighbors. And, they are worth a visit.

Lakewood Cemetery is one of the most noteworthy of these cemeteries. Originally built to provide the dead with spectacular views of Lake Harriet and Lake Calhoun, it is now surrounded by South Minneapolis homes that were built to be near these same views. Just down the street, then, is the boisterous Calhoun Square.
In Lakewood Cemetery, you can see the wealth of many of our most prominent past families on display through elegant tombstones, statues and mausoleums. Also worth a view is Lakewood's two magnificent mausoleums and its Byzantine chapel with its radiant mosaics.

Further south at 59th and Lyndale Avenue South, you will find the Oak Hill cemetery, where many early residents are buried. You can also visit the Pioneer and Veterans Cemetery on Lake and Cedar, which is the oldest cemetery in Minneapolis.

All these cemeteries are worth a meandering walk-through for a different perspective of Minneapolis' past.
