Age 83 of South Minneapolis, passed away on April 13, 2017, after a long battle with dementia. Mary Ann was an emeritus faculty member at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing, where she was an Assistant Professor for over three decades. After losing her daughter Nancy to cancer, she focused her teaching and professional training on advanced oncological nursing practices. She often lectured about caring for and coping with the loss of a child to cancer. Popular with her students, she was often asked to speak at commencement ceremonies. She was nominated by her students when she won the Excellence in Nursing Education Award in 1985.
Mary Ann worked her entire career on nursing and health professional development/continuing education programs. Twice, the Minnesota Chapter of the American Cancer Society awarded Mary Ann for Distinguished Service.
She was a wonderful and caring mother, grandmother and wife. Her positive spirit lives on in her children and grandchildren.
Mary Ann is proceeded in death by her parents, Harry and Hemelia Pool; daughter, Nancy and brother, Harry Richard Pool. She is survived by her husband, Richard; daughter Kathy; sons, Chris and John; grandchildren, James, Amelia and Mary Katharine; brother, James Pool; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Atwater; and many other friends and family.
A memorial service will held at Mount Olivet Careview Home, 5517 Lyndale Avenue South, Mpls 55419 On Friday April 21, 2017 at 11 AM. Memorials preferred to the Minnesota Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
