Ann T. Jones

Wednesday, August 17, 2016
Ann T. Jones,  age 77 of Minneapolis, soothed by the loving voices of her family at her side, died peacefully on August 13, 2016 due to complications from cancer.  As Ann said upon reflecting on her imminent death, "Who would have thunk it?" Born on April 1, 1939 in Gainesville, Georgia, Ann was the youngest daughter of Roy and Grace Tarpley. A fun-loving, sharp-minded, funky-thinking, feisty renaissance woman who was young at heart, Ann embraced new ideas, new talents and new friendships throughout her life. Though small in stature, Ann had a big, warm personality, always ready with a smile and a hug. Generous, encouraging and supportive of family and friends, she served as an example to those around her of how to live a kind and decent life and inspired others to dream big. Ann believed very strongly in working toward a better world, especially through her interest and involvement in politics. A lifelong Democrat, Ann put her values into practice by working on campaigns, informing those around her and driving seniors  in her community to the polls on Election Day.  The beauty in the world was cherished by Ann. She took pleasure in the joys of nature, especially the gardens she planted with her family and friends. As a sculptor, Ann turned her talents toward making the world more beautiful through her striking works of art from stone. Her greatest joy in life, however, was her family -- both her immediate and her extended. Having lived at times in Georgia, Seattle, New York and Florida, Ann moved up north to Minnesota, despite her discomfort with winter, to be close to her family. Ann found great happiness in being together and sharing in family events. Deeply devoted and supportive to her family, Ann loved being a mother and mother-in-law, but she especially loved being a grandmother. When asked the best part about life, Ann responded that it was her time spent with her loving son David, her daughter-in-law Rachel and her precious grandchild Isabelle. She was resilient in times of challenge, joyful in times of ease and forever grateful for the blessings in her life. She was feisty, fun and fascinating, but most especially Ann was full of love. She will be very dearly missed. Survived by her loving son David (Rachel Orman), adoring granddaughter Isabelle, sisters Peggy (Ronnie) Moody and Joan (Bob) Prescott, niece and nephews, grand nieces and nephews and her extended Minnesota family. Preceded in death by her parents Roy and Grace (Mangum) Tarpley. A special thank you to the caring staff at Fairview Southdale Hospital. Memorial service Wednesday, August 17th, at 11:00 AM at Gill Brothers Funeral Home, 5801 Lyndale Avenue South, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55419.
