William Paul Knotz, age 70, of Minneapolis, passed away on November 1, 2023 at his home. Bill was born on March 3, 1953 in Minneapolis to his parents Claude and Florence Knotz.
Bill attended DeLaSalle High School in Minneapolis. After graduation, Bill served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War Era. During his time in the service, Bill was stationed in Germany. While he was there, he picked up the language and could speak German conversationally. Bill’s son Adam, would follow in his dad’s footsteps of serving our country. While Adam was in the Marines, Bill took a road trip out to visit him in Barstow, California.
When Bill got home from Germany, he attended the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, where he studied psychology. While he was studying, he was also working at Black Dog Coal Plant in near Shakopee. Life eventually brought Bill to his career at the United States Postal Service, where he was a letter carrier for 34 years. Shortly into retirement, Bill went to work at Park’ N’ Fly at the MSP airport as a Shuttle Driver.
In 2007, Bill married the love of his life Katie Peterson. The two even took a 50th birthday celebration out to Sturgis together. While they were out there, they stayed at Butte Mountain in a 16’ Teepee. Bill had a strong love of nature and motorcycles, so would take his wife on motorcycle rides along the lakes, parkways, and state parks.
Throughout Bill’s life, he developed a passion for Martial Arts, but also love physical fitness in general, including running. Bill had a Brown belt in Judo and eventually had earned his 3rd degree black belt in Taekwondo. He then got his family involved in his sport, with multiple family members also earning black belts. Bill’s son Adam, clearly remembers his love for trying to sweep people while sparring. Bill had an achievement of running 900 miles through the parkways and lakes with his neighbor named Jan.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife Katie Peterson; children Adam Knotz, Erik (Kim) Peterson, and Sara St. Hilaire; grandchildren Austin and Jakob Knotz, Ashley, Emily, and Hailey Peterson, Kyle, Kris, Bridgit, and Liam St. Hilaire; siblings Mary (Hank) Riley, Robert “Mario” (Olga) Knotz. He is preceded in death by his parents Claude and Florence Knotz, and his sister Jane Knotz.
Mass of Christian Burial to be held on November 14, 2023 at Gichitwaa Kateri Catholic Church – 3045 Park Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55407. Parking is extremally limited, the family recommends carpooling. Mass will begin at 11:00 am with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment to follow Mass at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. There will also be a visitation the night prior on November 13, 2023 at Gill Brothers Funeral Home – 5801 Lyndale Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55419 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm.
Immediately after the Funeral service at Fort Snelling, there with be a lunch gathering at Kateri Catholic Church to share memories, stories and laughter of Bill and his life.
