Obituary for Thomas George Murphy

Thomas G. Murphy of Minneapolis, MN passed away peacefully on July 29, 2023. Son of Emma and Thomas Murphy and brother of Phyllis. He was born in Minneapolis, MN on July 12 and grew up on 57th and Pleasant Ave., South Minneapolis. He graduated from HS at DeLaSalle in 1945. He then enlisted in the Army and served in WWII – mainly in Hawaii. After returning from military service Tom met the love of his life Elaine Abendroth, and they were married in 1950. They were blessed with 73 years of marriage. They settled in South Minneapolis on 41st and Pleasant and raised 4 children - Michael, Daniel, David, and Mary. Tom worked for the Railroad but spent most of his career with the US Post Office. He worked for over three decades in Parcel Post downtown Minneapolis. Many lunch hours were spent playing a good game of cards with coworkers. Tom and Elaine were blessed with 11 Grandchildren and 12 Greatgrandchildren and always looked forward to their visits and socializing with them! He retired and spent many joyful years on the golf course with good friends – his favorite courses were all the Minneapolis courses. He was an avid reader and was found many late evenings with a book in his hands. He also loved a good John Wayne western movie with a home popped bowl of popcorn. Tom and Elaine moved to an apartment in Lakeville MN and for several years, enjoyed many new friends in the building. Tom looked forward to a great Friday night game of Texas Holdem down in the game room! They then moved to the Timbers in Apple Valley and enjoyed new friendships and activities! Tom had a personality that would light up a room with his smile and warm loving demeanor – he always enjoyed people and good conversation! He touched so many lives over his 96 years and will be dearly missed by his family and friends!

Thomas is preceded in death by his parents Tom and Emma, his sister Phyllis and his son Daniel. He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years Elaine, sons and daughter in-laws Mike (Kathy), Dave (Joanne) and daughter and son in-law Mary (Tony) McDonald. Also surviving are grandchildren Stacy, Tom, Mike, Jim, Brian, Erin, Kate, Patrick, Terry, Neal & Lauren.
