It is with great sadness his family announces his passing on Friday, May 8th, 2020 at the age of 75. Tom touched many lives, including his loving wife, Mary Ann; sons, Eric (Karen) McKay and Aaron (Melissa Kamm) McKay; daughter, Nicole (Matt Wilcox) McKay; grandchildren, Danielle, Christian (Adrianna), Elle, Charlie, Neve and Devin; brother, Derek (Maggie) McKay; sister, Nadine McNeill; niece, Nadine, (Daniel) Schippers; nephew, Brian (Miriam) McNeill, and numerous family and friends. He was greeted in Heaven by his parents, Thomas & Jean; sister, Diane; brother-in-law, Don McNeill; and nephew, Kellen McNeill.
Tom graduated from Robbinsdale High School in 1962. Already an Electrician working at Egan McKay with his dad and uncle, he started classes at the UofM to pursue a degree in business. Shortly after, he enlisted in the Navy and served his country during Vietnam as a Navy SeaBee. Before deployment he was able to marry the love of his life, Mary Ann Mayer. Their 54th wedding anniversary was May 7th.
Tom and Mary Ann established their home and raised their family in Delano. Tom obtained his degree from St. Cloud State University and enjoyed working with his brother as an electrician.
In his younger years, Tom liked to do anything fast whether it was water skiing on the river with family, racing #60 around the track, or snowmobiling with friends. He enjoyed years of canoeing, camping and fishing with his best friends in the Boundary Waters. With the kids growing older, and some “encouragement”, he slowed down. He was passionate about coaching Eric and Aaron in hockey and Nicole on the softball field. He was an avid spectator at his grandchildren’s sporting events. The family has fond memories of his dance moves and his competitiveness at the family game table. His favorite thing to do is brag about his kids. Tom was devoted to his faith and dedicated to his church, Light of Christ.
The family would like to thank the staff at Trails of Orono for their devoted care. A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at a later date. He will be laid to rest at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Gill Brothers Funeral Home is caring for the family.
