Obituary

Thomas (Tom) E. Dolan, 91, of Bloomington, MN, passed away on June 3, surrounded by family members and his wife, Betty Nell (née Hamel), of 65 years. His legacy lives on in his children, Rev. Timothy, Dr. Catherine (Dan O’Brien), Michael (Lori), Deborah (Wayne) Wulf, Paul (Linda), Anne (Terry) Hughes, and Mark (Jennifer); 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is survived by his brother, William (Marlene) and sister-in-law, Jean and was preceded in death by daughter, Therese; grandson, Mateo; parents, Edmund T. and Katherine M. Dolan and brother, Robert.

Tom was born in Hutchinson, MN, although the family relocated to Minneapolis where he lived most of his life. He was a graduate of St. Albert the Great elementary school and De La Salle High School in Minneapolis and the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul. He served active duty in the 47th Infantry Division in 1951 and 1952. He met Betty Nell on a blind date, they married in 1955 and began their family. He achieved success in three careers, each 17 years long, in account management with the Campbell Mithun advertising agency, as a Vice President with Norwest Corporation (Wells Fargo) and as an administrator and adjunct professor with the University of St. Thomas Graduate School of Business.

His Catholic faith was a cornerstone of his life and he was a long-time member of Annunciation parish in Minneapolis. He was ordained a Deacon in 1983 by the Archdiocese of St Paul and Minneapolis and served in many parishes, at Sharing and Caring Hands and Mary's Place Transitional Shelter, on numerous boards and committees, and as chaplain at N. C. Little Memorial Hospice and area hospitals for several years. In 1986 he was honored with the Humanitarian Award from the College of St. Thomas and in 1991 he was recognized by the St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity for his “creative, energetic and faith-filled service.”

The family would like to extend our deep gratitude to the caring staff at Friendship Village of Bloomington, where Tom and Betty Nell made their home over the past eight years, and especially to the Health Center nursing staff over the past several months. Visitation 3 - 7 p.m., Monday, June 15 at Gill Brothers Funeral Home, 5801 South Lyndale Ave., Minneapolis. Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 16 at Annunciation Church, 509 W 54th St., Minneapolis. Face masks and observation of social distancing expected. Live-streaming and recorded video link of funeral will be shared in the obituary at www.gillbrothers.com. Memorials are preferred to Sharing and Caring Hands or donor’s choice.
