Obituary for Robert Sidney Voigt

Voigt, Robert Sidney
When Bob Voigt died June 17 at age 88, music, sculpture and gardening were still his passions. His bronze sculptures and gardens and trees he planted at the Voigt farm overlooking the St. Croix River will live on; his piano compositions are preserved on tape. Bob was born in Huron, SD, to Carl E. Voigt and Eula Manwaring Voigt. Although the family moved to Minneapolis in 1943, he kept in touch with his boyhood friends and had a special place in his heart for all things South Dakotan. Bob graduated from Washburn HS in 1948 and the University of MN in 1953, and was in the U.S. Army Finance Corps from 1953-55. His extensive career includes Midland National Bank and the Minnesota Zoo Foundation (first Executive Director) before establishing his own firm, Fundraising Management Counsel, in 1985. He assisted non-profits with capital campaigns: Ronald McDonald House, Alliance Francaise, Rise, the Bloomington Fine Arts Center, Migizi Communications, Lyric Arts, and more. Bob was a volunteer and board member of many organizations including Ethnic Dance Theater, Carpenter Nature Center, the Denmark Township Historical Society, Men’s Garden Club of Mpls, Rotary Club of Mpls, MN Grape Growers Association, the MN Land Trust and the National Society of Fundraising Executives. In 1979, Bob and his wife, Mavis, bought farmland in Denmark Township and planted grapevines, replaced later with thousands of trees. In 1987 they bought the adjoining farmstead and created dozens of flower and vegetable gardens. The family gathers at the farm for reunions and events: Mavis, daughter Julie (Richard Sebasttian), son David, his wife Ruth Zietlow and their children, Eleanor, Isabel and Carl. Bob’s nephew Greg Voigt and nieces Caryn Voigt and Nancy Voigt Nieman visit, along with many friends and family.
Memorials can be sent to Carpenter Nature Center, 12805 St. Croix Trail South, Hastings MN 55033. Private interment at Lakewood Cemetery. Memorial celebration at a later date.
