Obituary for Richard Winnor Graves

Graves, Richard W. (Bud)
Bud Graves, who embraced life with the gusto of youth and was dedicated to his wife and family, died Saturday. He was 89.
Bud was an avid runner, loved playing golf with his friends, watching the Minnesota Twins and going to Mystic Lake Casino to play blackjack. Mostly he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He spent years by the side of his wife, Kay, after she fell ill with Alzheimer’s.
Richard W. “Bud” Graves was born July 9, 1929 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Bud graduated from St. Thomas Academy and the University of Minnesota. He and Kay met as juniors in high school and were married for more than 61 years before her passing in 2014. Bud was a CPA and founding partner in the firm Graves, McKenna, Lundeen and Almquist, where he made many lifelong friends among his colleagues and clients.
He and Kay enjoyed playing bridge with friends. They took many memorable trips and loved walking the beach together in Florida.
Thank you to the wonderful caregivers at Castle Ridge Care Center for the love and care given to him the past couple of years, just as they cared for Kay during the last years of her life.
He was preceded in death by wife, Katherine B. “Kay” Graves and son-in-law Reed Olson; survived by children Cynthia (Reed) Olson, Thomas Graves, Paul (Laura) Graves, and Suzanne (Paul) Reed; grandchildren Jenna (Pat) Anderson and Erin Olson; Stephen, Brian, Jacob, and Dylan Graves; Lauren, Kayla, Sarah and Emily Reed and great-granddaughter Quinn Anderson.
Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Friday, May 10 at the Church of St. Patrick, 6820 St. Patrick’s Lane, Edina, with visitation one hour prior to Mass. Interment Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota Heights.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Edina or the Union Gospel Mission, Minneapolis.
