Obituary for Philip Lawrence Roe
Philip Lawrence Roe passed away on Dec 31, 2020 at the age of 82 from COVID which hastened the impacts of Lewy Body disease. He was born March 21, 1938, to Ludwig and Alpha (Larson) Roe in Montevideo, Minn, the youngest of 8 siblings. He graduated from St Olaf College in 1960 and earned his MBA from Harvard in 1965.
Phil spent the majority of his career working as a lay leader with the Lutheran Church from the ALC to the ELCA with his final role at the Mission Investment Fund helping churches expand their reach and ministry through capital improvements. He also worked at Honeywell and the Minnesota Arboretum. He was an active member of St John's Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Phil was a history and politics buff. He was generous and witty and had a smile that stayed with you. He enjoyed conversation over a good cup of coffee or beer (and could tolerate bad coffee, but not bad beer). He used a snow shovel, not a snow blower and a push lawn mower, not a gas mower. Family ties were very important to Phil, and his happiest times were spent with his family, both immediate and extended. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife Kristine Streng Roe, his two daughters Elizabeth and Kari, their spouses Eric Willette and Steve Saito, two amazing granddaughters, Eleanor and Clara, sister Charlotte Roe, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters Elizabeth, Margaret, Ellen and Katherine, brothers Louis and Alfred, and three nephews.
The family extends their thanks to caregivers at Walker Care Suites and at Mount Olivet Day Program for their love and support of Phil as his Lewy Body disease increasingly limited his capacities. A service to celebrate and honor his life is planned this summer or fall. The family is directing memorials to St. Olaf College and Lutheran World Relief. Roe, Philip L.
