Obituary for Michael Thomas Callaghan

Michael Callaghan, or simply Callaghan, describes himself as "just a blue-collar guy from Fort Frances" Ontario, Canada. Outgoing, gregarious, and curious, Michael asks everyone from cab drivers to archbishops, "What's your story?" Good hospitality, a "bump", and a game of cards can all be expected at Callaghan's house for whomever drops by ("the door's always open"). His home growing up was the same way, with his parents Mary and Wes. Despite his brothers Dale (Phyllis) and Jack (deceased) being much older when Michael was born, the brothers were all very close. After going to Carleton University and becoming involved with ministry, Michael moved to the U.S. and married his now former wife, Denise Callaghan. They had three children, Luke, Katie (Ben) Paredes, and Erin (Kristefor) Lysne, whom he loved immensely. Later in life he met his match and married Kristine Kubes. Together they had a charism for hospitality that only strengthened their circle of family and friends. Michael’s quiet and ardent faith led him to accept and love people. Kind, humble, funny, patient, he could talk with anyone – whether friend or stranger – and the visit was meaningful. Michael was a huge, genuine, warm presence in our lives. Loving connections and relationships are his legacy. His absence will be felt by all, including his three grandchildren Anthony, Julian, and Ruby, as well as Jessica and Bridget Brombach.

We imagine Michael is now at a Heavenly card table playing our family card game of Smear with his parents, brother Jack, and best friend Greg Brombach. We may have all heard his stories a million times, but wouldn't it be great to hear the story of the bat, or his pilgrimage to Assisi, or his adventures hitchhiking across Europe, just one more time...? Callaghan: We are all better for having known and loved you. May your spirit and legacy live on in us. Rest in peace.
