Obituary for Mary Philomena Lewis (Gaughan)

Mary Philomena Lewis (Gaughan), age 79 of Richfield passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in her sleep June 9, 2020. Mary was born on May 5, 1941 in the small village of Tavanaghmore, in County Mayo, Ireland and immigrated to the U.S. as a teenager. Preceded in death by parents, John and Kathleen (Higgins) Gaughan; brother, Johnny. Survived by children, Tim Lewis; Jayne (Robert W.) Jacobson and Patrick (Heather) Lewis; grandchildren, Madalyn, Molly, Leo and Bel; siblings, Seamus, Billy, Breege, Hannah and Pat; many nieces and nephews.

Mary was a kind and gentle soul who always put others before herself. She was loved by countless friends and family in the U.S. and abroad. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those she touched.

Mary lived most of her life in Minnesota, but also parts of her life in Florida, New York City and Baltimore. She also moved back to Ireland for a few years before her mother Kathleen passed away. She was proud of her Irish heritage and stayed in close contact with all of her relatives across the pond.

Mary’s Catholic faith was very important to her and she rarely missed Sunday mass. She had a gift for engaging anyone in small talk, making others laugh and smile. She enjoyed her work in retail, including many years at Tuesday Morning, where she worked up until her death.

Private family memorial service, July 16th at The Church of Christ the King, 5029 Zenith Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55410. Burial in Ireland at a later date. Memorials preferred to Christ the King church (www.ctkmpls.org)
