Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Hecht (Heggestad)

Mary Elizabeth Hecht (Heggestad), age 72, passed away Thursday August 17, 2023. Mary was born May 24, 1951 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Her father served 32 years in the army, and so the family moved around. Mary lived in El Paso, Texas until her mother passed away. Then the family lived in Germany for several years and then ended up in Bloomington, Minnesota. Mary attended John F. Kennedy High School. This is where she met Wyeth Hecht. Wyeth and Mary were high school sweethearts. They were married June 4, 1971. Mary worked at St. Paul Fire and Marine until her children, Rachelle and Wyeth Jr were born. Mary was a stay-at-home mom with the kids. After the kids were older Mary went to work at Walgreens. There she was a cashier and head of the photo department until she retired in 2000.
Mary had many passions. She loved to read and somehow was able to read and watch tv at the same time. Mary did many crafts over the years. She hand stitched felt Christmas ornaments, cross-stitched, painted ceramics, stamping and card making, flower wreaths and anything else her sister Catherine or Rachelle would get her into. There were many, many trips to Michael's and Joanne Fabrics over the years! Mary loved music. The radio was always on in the kitchen. Some of her favorites were Prince, anything Motown and of course, Christmas music. Mary was also well known for her cooking and baking. Mary's baked treats were so delicious. She made all kinds of Christmas treats like peppermint candy canes, Russian tea cakes, caramels, toffee and peanut brittle. Mary was an amazing cook. Oj loved to cook with her. We always had a homemade dinner together. Mary's most well-loved dinners were her sloppy joes and famous pizza burgers! Mary's greatest passion of all was her grandchildren. Jack, Wyeth, Eli and Vance were her loves. When the grandkids were born, she would take every opportunity to love on them and spoil them.
Mary was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2008. It took her from us way too soon.
Mary is survived by husband Wyeth; children Rachelle Christian and Wyeth Jr. (Jenn) Hecht; grandchildren, Jack, Wyeth, Eli, and Vance; sisters Susan, Connie, Carol and Jan; brothers, Leh and Tom; and dear cousin Vicky and many other cousins, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Madeline Heggestad; sister, Catherine Kendrick; and brother Matthew Heggestad.
