Obituary for Kathryn Mary "Katie" Hamel (Mauel)

Kathryn M. (Katie) Hamel Nee Mauel

Born January 14, 1923 Died May 19, 2023

Preceded in death by husband, Dr. Joseph Hamel; parents, Dr. Nicholas and Kathryn Mauel, brothers,
Robert (Irene) Mauel, Rev. John Mauel, Rev James Mauel and William (Pat) Mauel. Survived by her 6 children, Joseph (Margie) Hamel, Anne (Kenny) Katz, Peggy (John) Magnuson, Nick (Mona) Hamel, Patty Hamel, Michelle (Kurt) Noltimier. Also survived by 13 grandchildren, Alyssa, Joe, Ellen (Laura), Peter, Katie, Aaron, Micah, Anne (Rodney), David, Nick (Tracy), Luke, Patrice, Jesse and 6 great grandchildren.

Katie grew up in Cashton, a small, dairy-farming community in Wisconsin. After completing her nursing training in Lacrosse she enlisted in the US Army Reserve Corps (later becoming the US Air Force). Here, she spent 7 years as a captain and flight nurse bringing wounded and sick military personnel back from post WWII Europe to hospitals in the United States. While stationed at the Air Force base in Newfoundland she met and then married Captain Joseph I. Hamel in 1951. They eventually settled in Minneapolis and went on to have 6 children. A key aspect of their life together included the time they spent at their cabin on Whitefish Lake in northern Minnesota. Nothing made Katie happier than to see her children and grandchildren enjoying the water and the woods and to spend time with her large extended family who shared cabins nearby.

Central to Katie’s life was her Catholic faith and its emphasis on service. In addition to raising six children, she worked for 20 years as a volunteer nurse at the Teen Age Medical Service (TAMS) in Mpls, providing counseling and support to youth in crisis. She also joined her husbands solo OB/GYN practice supporting patient care.

Katie was a kind, humble, thoughtful and nonjudgmental soul who was quick to recognize the good in others. She had an especial eye for the beauty present in the off-beat, the irregular. She was a great listener. We all felt her unconditional love regularly. Despite her many hobbies and interests there was no question that her husband, Joe, was the love of her life and her faith in God was her guide.

A special thanks to HealthPartners Hospice and the many caregivers at Eagle Crest Presbyterian Home in Roseville.
