Obituary for Helen Louise Roesler (Hormann)

HELEN LOUISE HORMANN ROESLER (Died August 25, 2022; Age 100)

Was born on April 16, 1922 in Herkimer, Kansas to Edward and Julie (Koeneke) Hormann in Herkimer, KS. It was Easter Sunday. The family lived there until she was almost 5 and then moved to Clarinda, Iowa where she attended first grade at Lincoln School. That spring she was selected to be the trainbearer for the Clarinda High School May Queen. The family moved to Malmo, NE in 1927 where her father owned and operated a grain business, and elevator. She was confirmed in 1936 at St. Matthews Lutheran church near Cedar Bluffs. She graduated as Valedictorian from Malmo High School in 1940 with scholarships to the Univ. of Nebraska, and Midland College. While at Midland she was a member of Midland Players, the Warriorette Pep Club, Piano Club, and Phi Omega sorority where she was President.

She taught grades 3,4, and 5 in Ceresco, NE for one year and then in Ashland, NE for two years. She attended the University of Nebraska and graduated with a B.A. in Education in 1947. While at the University she was a member of Gamma Delta-Lutheran Students Organization. Chi Omega Sorority, and Pi Lambda Theta-Education Honorary.

In 1947-48 she taught business courses and English at Lyons High School. On Sept. 5 1948 she was married to Theodore W. Roesler at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont, NE. They lived in Madison, WI for two years where Ted was working on his doctorate in Economics. While in Madison Helen was a secretary in the office of the Dean of Home Economics. In 1950 they moved to Rock Island, IL where Ted chaired the Business Departament at Augustana College. Their two sons were born there, and all were members of Immanuel Lutheran church. After 7 years they moved to Lincoln, NE where Ted taught in the College of Business, and eventually chaired the Economics Department at the Univ. of Nebraska. Helen was active at Faith Lutheran Church serving as President of the Ladies Aid and Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.

In the early 1970’s the family were involved as one of the founders of All Saints Lutheran Church in Lincoln. Helen represented the congregation on the Southwest Regional Synod of the AELC for 10 years. She was a delegate to the organizing convention of the AELC and to the convention of the merging of the Three Lutheran Synods (ALC, LCA and AELC) form what is now the ELCA, the largest Lutheran Church body. Helen joined Ted in leading numerous Economics study-travel tours to Europe in the 1980s and 90s. She thrived in learning about cultures, including her family history in Germany. She and Ted were equally as passionate about the Colorado Rockies and spending time in their beloved Estes Park culminating in owning a cabin there for a time.

Helen was a member of and active in Chi Omega Alumni Org, UNL Faculty Women’s Club, many Bible classes, and served weekly Eucharist at her beloved All Saints church. Helen moved to Minnesota in 2007 to be closer to family. She would still drive to Nebraska well into her 90s to visit family and friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dr. Ted Roesler, and her brother Harold Hormann. Survivors are William (Bill) Roesler (Sona); Timothy (Tim) Roesler (Marci), Grandaughters: Carolina and Madeline Roesler, and Jesse Jenkins Hosmer, plus two sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends. She will be interred at Memorial Cemetery Fremont, NE next to her husband Ted, following a small family graveside service.
