Obituary for Harold Roger Blom

Blom, Harold “Hal” Roger age 90, of Bloomington, Minnesota, entered into his eternal rest Jan 29, 2023. He courageously fought through five hip surgeries starting in 2008, a massive stroke, his last 6 months unable to walk, and for his last breath to spend more time with his family. He was surrounded by his loving wife of 62 years who had been devoted to his care since suffering a severe stroke in November, 2018. Harold was born March 26, 1932 in Saint Paul, Minnesota to Karl August Blom and Hulda Marie (Palovara) Blom. He graduated from Johnson High School in 1951 on the east side of Saint Paul, Minnesota where he was a member of the track team, before being drafted by the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He served on the 38th Infantry Scout Dog Platoon in Korea and had a real love for his German Shepard, Fritz. He was a tremendous bowler, winning many trophies and appearing in St. Paul newspapers many times for his achievements. He married the love of his life, Jane Cecelia Wicke on June 18, 1960 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in South Saint Paul. Four children; Randall (Randy), Julie, Mark, and Amy were born between August 1961 and January 1966. Harold and Jane moved to their newly built home in Bloomington in June of 1966. Harold did some coaching of Mark and Randy’s little league baseball teams and played ball in the fields behind the backyard with the kids. His love for sports persisted throughout his life, and he was a lifelong Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan rarely missing a game on TV. He worked in the grocery business as a Produce Manager for Kline Foods, Applebaum Food Markets and Rainbow Foods.

His greatest joy was taking his family on long summer vacations to Banff, Glacier, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Grand
Canyon, Grand Tetons, and Badlands National Parks, Disneyland and Disneyworld. Starting with a small tent
trailer, and working up to larger RV’s and Motor Homes he traveled the country with his wife, children, and sometimes in-laws. He also enjoyed trips with his wife and friends to Medjugorje, Rome, Israel, and Sweden. He, wife, and friends took many religious bus tours they enjoyed. He was active in Pro-Life activities. After retirement Harold volunteered to help with funeral dinners at St. Bonaventure Catholic church in Bloomington. Hal’s social time was going to White Castle for morning coffee or breakfast with a group of regulars as often as he could. He will be remembered as an easy going, humble and gentle soul who loved family, sports, and life.
His faith carried him through life's ups and downs and he found peace in the Lord during his most recent health trials.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Hulda who Immigrated to the United States from Malmbarget, Lapland Sweden in 1923, his sisters Karol and Anna born in Sweden, brother Charles “Bobby”, and his youngest daughter Amy. He is survived by his wife Jane, his children, Randy, Julie, and Mark (Melissa), grandchildren Chris, Maria, Luke, Jennifer, Justin, Tony, Amanda, Tori, Emily, great grandchildren Jaylen, Jamari, Jane, Owen, Alivia, Owen, James, Everly, Sawyer, and Adalynn.
