Obituary for Gerald Thomas Mullin Jr.

Mullin, Gerald T., MD

This kind, insightful man died December 13, 2019, from effects of a 2010 stroke. Born in North Minneapolis April 28, 1933, to Ruth (Kammerer) and Gerald Mullin, he was a graduate of St. Bridget’s Elementary, St. Thomas Academy, St. Thomas College, and the University of Minnesota Medical School. He completed a residency at the Mayo Clinic, specializing in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. While there, Jerry met his future bride, Margaret Lawler, whom he married in 1962. After serving two years in the U.S. Army 20th Station Hospital in Nuremberg, Germany, he returned to Minneapolis. He practiced 36 years at Downtown Internal Medicine in the Medical Arts Building with Dr. William Hedrick and Dr. John Middlebrook. He served as a clinical professor at the University of Minnesota Rheumatology Department and worked at Smiley’s Clinic in Family Practice.

Known for being laid back with good humor, Jerry liked nothing better than hiking in Glacier Park or canoeing the Namekagon River. In retirement, he served as a mentor to first-year medical students. He was a runner, reader, golfer, and loved the arts. Jerry and Margie enjoyed travel and volunteered 15 years at the Common Hope Project in Antigua, Guatemala. His warmth and zest for life will be missed.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Margie Mullin, and four children: Mary (Paul Donovan), Emmett (Julia), Jerry (Meghan), and Peter (Ellen) Mullin. Also, 15 grandchildren: Joe, Ben, Sally, and Martin Donovan; Louisa, Ella, Margaret, Charles; Elinor, Cecelia, Matthew; Ruth, Tom, Fiona, and Jack Mullin. Gerald is survived by three siblings: Kathleen (John) Gratzek, James (Franchelle) Mullin, and Sheila Manley; also many nieces, nephews, and treasured friends.

Heartfelt thanks to the entire staff at Jones-Harrison Residence for their exceptional care, and to Grace Hospice for their genuine kindness.
