Obituary for Elsa Louise Stazesky (Mohn)

Elsa Louise Stazesky (Mohn), Ph.D. age 70, Brooklyn, New York

Elsa Louise Stazesky (Mohn) age 70, passed, after a valiant fight against cancer, with her daughter, Drew and sister, Katharine by her side on December 15, 2022, in Brooklyn, NY. She was born May 25, 1952, in Grand Forks, ND, second of five children to the Rev. Truman Mohn and Shirley JoAnn Mohn. Elsa lived primarily in Minneapolis, MN into her twenties and then the remainder of her life in Syracuse, NY and then Brooklyn, NY after marrying her husband, Rick.

Elsa graduated from Minneapolis Lutheran High in 1970 and earned a B.A. in Philosophy, attending first Luther College in Decorah, IA and then Augsburg College in St. Paul, MN. Her education culminated in being hooded in 1992 for a Ph.D. in Mass Communication Theory and Research from the prestigious S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY.

Elsa had an outstanding career working as a Senior Analytics professional in several fields: Finance (Citibank and J.P. Morgan); Media (Minneapolis Star and Tribune and Time, Inc.); Entertainment (CBS and HBO); and the City of New York Human Resources Administration, the largest Social Services agency in the U.S.

Elsa was a Renaissance woman to her family and friends for her ability to master whatever she put her mind to. She played the piano and flute; had a lovely Alto/Soprano singing voice; was a painter and skilled seamstress, sewing her daughter’s Halloween costumes every year; excellent cook; worked on the yellow Karmann Ghia she helped to rebuild and drive while in graduate school; and always carried herself with poise and a refined sense of style. Elsa was devoted to her daughter and family. By nature, she preferred being at home when not at work but for those who knew her, she was incredibly charming and caring. As a friend remarked, “she was one cool Lady.”

Elsa was preceded in death by her parents and one sibling, Truman, Shirley JoAnn, and Jonathan. She is survived by her husband Richard (Rick) C., Jr. of 39 years, her daughter Drew Elizabeth, her brother Stephen (Sylvia) Mohn, and her sisters Katharine (Carl) Kragh and Monica Mohn and six nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 from 4-7pm at Gill Brothers Funeral Home, 5801 Lyndale Ave. So.

Funeral Service 1:00 pm at West St. Olaf Church, 70640 260th Avenue, Hayfield, MN 55940 with interment to follow at West St. Olaf Church Cemetery.
