Obituary for Carroll Edgar Crawford

Carroll Edgar Crawford II of Wayzata, MN died on March, 3, 2020 at the age of 91 peacefully in his home. Preceded in death by his parents, Richard & Alice Crawford, and his brothers Richard & Rodney, He is survived by wife of 68 years Monie; children Jim (Marcia), Judy Martin (Bill), Michael (Cees), Kate McNaught (Doug) and David. Eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Carroll was born July 19, 1928 in Lake Bluff, Illinois. Grew up in Deephaven on Lake Minnetonka, attended Blake School, Class of ’46 and was a graduate of the University of Minnesota Class of ’50 School of Journalism. His first work experience was as an advertising executive with Savage-Lewis Advertising in Minneapolis. He continued with a career in radio station management owning three AM radio stations in the Upper Midwest. Carroll is best known as the founder & publisher of the Sun Newspaper Suburban Newspapers chain. He grew the distribution from 3 small suburban weeklies to a circulation of 40+ publications serving all the suburbs of Minneapolis/St.Paul in the 1960’s through the 1980’s.

Carroll loved sports as a player and spectator. Growing up he excelled at hockey and was an elite sailor in the Minnetonka Yacht Club. Later on he fell in love with golf and tennis. But his true passion was University of Minnesota Gopher football and hockey.

In retirement he loved visiting his grandchildren and great grandchildren. The greatest joy in his entire life was being with Monie!
