Ann Marie (Nancy) Lynch, age 92, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2023, in her daughter’s home surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Born in Cedarhurst, New York, to parents Anne and Thomas Lydon, immigrants from County Galway, Ireland, Nancy grew up in Woodmere, with many cousins and extended family throughout the New York City area.
Nancy attended St. Joachim Grade School, Cedarhurst, NY and then Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School, Brooklyn, NY where she graduated as Valedictorian of her class. She went on to receive a Diploma in Nursing from The Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn, NY and later a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. John’s University, New York. Nancy met Michael Francis (Mike) Lynch while working as a Registered Nurse and Nursing Instructor at The Kings County Hospital. They were married on September 7, 1957 at St. Joseph Church, Hewlett, NY. They moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma for Mike to complete a Thoracic & Cardiovascular surgical residency and, upon completion, they made Minnesota their home for 60 years. Nothing made Nancy happier than spending time with her family. She loved visiting New York every summer, where she was a member of Sun & Surf Beach Club for over 50 years, traveling to Ireland when she could, and seeing her children and 22 grandchildren as often as she could, in various locales around the U.S. and abroad.
Nancy is preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Michael, and son, John. She is survived by daughter, Patricia (Daniel) Stapleton, grandchildren, Joseph, Kevin, and Daniel, daughter, Anne (Thomas) Pittman; granddaughter, Ann Lydon (Brigid); daughter, Ellen (Paul) Reader, grandchildren, Matthew and Hannah; son, Michael (Darlene) Lynch, grandchildren, Grace, Michael, Nicholas; daughter, Brigid Lynch (Chris Knudsen), grandchildren, Nora and Bébhinn; son, Thomas (Anastasia) Lynch, grandchildren, Sean, Frankie, Thomas, and Amelia; daughter, Sheila Lynch (Steve Butler), grandchildren, Keira, Emmet, and Úna; son Peter (Heather) Lynch, grandchildren Fiona, Liam, Delaney, and Conor. She also leaves behind a wealth of extended family members and friends.
Nancy cherished her time volunteering and giving back to her community. She truly lived the advice in one of her favorite blessings, “may there always be work for your hands to do.” She volunteered through her parish serving on the St. Cabrini Guild, volunteering with the Loaves and Fishes initiative to bring food to the underserved, teaching in the religious education program, and visiting parishioners who were homebound. She also supported her children’s activities, spending time on groups like the Edina Soccer Association Board and Benilde St. Margaret’s High School Women’s Club. When her children were grown, she volunteered as a school nurse providing hearing and vision exams and supporting the Minneapolis League of Catholic Women’s programs. In her years of leading efforts to serve, Nancy had an incredible ability to bring others to the effort and shine light on their contributions.
Nancy’s warm and welcoming spirit made her a delight to those who had the pleasure to know her. She was a devoted daughter, a loving wife and mother, an adored grandma, and a wonderful friend. Though saddened by our loss, her family is grateful for her, and we cherish the memories of our time together.
