Daniel Cyril Manion
Of Edina, died June 7, 2012. He was an indomitable force of nature; honored father, grandfather, brother, friend, colleague and the original organic gardener.
The oldest of nine children, Dan was born May 21, 1921, to Herbert Louis and Barbara Marie Pesch Manion, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Dan married Lorna Jean Strey on April 19, 1948, and together they raised five children: Michael, Kathleen, Daniel, Patrick and Kevin. He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen (Tom Squires) and sons, Daniel P. (Deneen), Patrick (Rosemary) and Kevin (Shelby), daughter-in-law Deborah Manion; and grandchildren, Meghan, Brendan, Rory, Ashlee, Angela, Daniel, Connor, Eamonn and Charles Manion, and Jason Morgan; sisters Joyce Morrow, Nancy Zillig and brother Patrick. He was preceded in death by his beloved Lorna, his son Michael, brothers, Brian, Donald and Joseph, and sisters, Kathryn and Maureen.
After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Dan apprenticed as a glazier with T.C. Esser then worked with PPG Industries as a glazier and later as branch manager in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and Duluth and Minneapolis, Minnesota. In later years, Dan worked with Acme, Gateway and Ford-McNutt glass companies in Minneapolis, and Esser Glass in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He was named president of the Minnesota Glass Association in 1989 and known throughout the industry as a man of integrity, ingenuity and hard work. He was a proud member of the VFW and the Knights of Columbus.
Dan’s family wishes to thank his wonderful neighbors, Don Pederson and Peter Kaiser, and their families, for their thoughtfulness and unending support throughout the years. We also wish to thank all the staff of Vernon Terrace who made his final months so pleasant. Finally, we thank the nursing staff at Presbyterian Homes for their tender care of our father and their incredible compassion toward our family during his final days.
Dan was buried at Grandview Park Cemetery in a private family service on June 9, 2012. A visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 23rd at Church of the Incarnation, 3801 Pleasant Ave S., Minneapolis, MN 55409, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Luncheon will follow services.
