Obituary for Eleanor Thompson Heegaard (Thompson)

Eleanor Marie Heegaard, age 89, of Minneapolis, died peacefully on Friday October 5, 2018 at Mount Olivet Careview Home. Survived by children: Karen (Chuck LeGros) and Bill (Kristyn) of Minneapolis, Julie of Chicago, and grandchildren: Alex and ZoƩ Heegaard-LeGros, Leighton and Sophia Heegaard. Preceded in death by her parents, Edward D. and Violet F. Thompson; brother Richard Thompson of Warren, Ohio and half siblings Edward Thompson of Edgewater, Florida and Dorothy Thompson of Chicago.

Born March 28, 1929 in Youngstown, Ohio, Eleanor attended high school at Southern Seminary in Buena Vista, VA; college at Syracuse University and University of NC, Chapel Hill and secretarial school at Katherine Gibbs in New York City. In 1950, she joined the CIA working in Washington DC and Japan (with her then husband, Roger Heegaard) until returning to Minneapolis to raise a family.

A service/reception for friends and family will be held at Lakewood Cemetery Memorial Chapel on Friday, October 26th at noon, 3600 Hennepin Ave, Minneapolis, MN.

In lieu of flowers donations preferred: National Alliance on Mental Illness (https://namimn.org) in recognition of her long struggle with mental health or to The Eleanor Heegaard Scholarship fund at Mount Olivet Careview Homes) in honor of the tender care she received during her time at Mount Olivet. This education fund will assist immigrant employees to reach the next level of certification in their field (5517 Lyndale Avenue S, Mpls, Mn 55419, https://www.mtolivethomes.org).
