Lowell Howard Kleven, born October 11, 1932, in Ashland, Wisconsin, died peacefully in Minneapolis on October 2, 2018. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Sylvia Hanson and Charlotte Rimmereid. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janice Kiebach Kleven, and their sons Thomas Kleven (Kari) and Andrew Kleven (Jennifer), as well as five grandchildren: Sam, Anna, Solveig, Lena and Haakon. Lowell grew up in Battle Lake, Minnesota and graduated high school in Blanchardville, Wisconsin before attending Augsburg and completing his studies at the University of Minnesota Medical School. He served as a physician in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Bremerton, Washington and Okinawa, Japan, before returning home to complete his orthopedic residency at the University of Minnesota, at which time he met, and eventually married, Janice. He completed a hand surgery fellowship in New Orleans with Dr. Daniel Riordan and then practiced as a partner with Northwest Orthopedics on staff at North Memorial Medical Center for 28 years, during which time he made several service trips to Madagascar. He was an active member of Westwood Lutheran Church volunteering there with Habitat for Humanity and Families Moving Forward. Music was a big part of his life; he sang bass in choirs at Augsburg College, Calvary Lutheran Church, Westwood Lutheran Church and participated with Augsburg’s Centennial Singers for 20 years. He loved the outdoors; hiking, hunting, gardening, and especially, fly fishing in Montana, where he and Janice had a second home.
Memorials are preferred to the Dr. Lowell and Janice Kleven Scholarship at Augsburg University, Campus Box 142, 2211 Riverside Avenue, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 55454; the National Lutheran Choir; Mount Olivet Homes; or the donor’s choice.
