Obituary for Paul Gregory Montgomery Sr.

Paul Gregory Montgomery Sr.
Montgomery, Paul G. Sr. Age 83. Also known as Monk, Monty, Pablo, Senior, Uncle Paul, Grandpa. His long journey in darkness (Alzheimer's) peacefully ended on August 25, 2018. Now sheltered in resplendent light, and remembering everything, he's again writing letters to newspapers and other missives on all he finds important. Preceded in death by parents Harry "H.V." and Vina Montgomery; sisters, Marcella Wilkes and Rita "Sister Rita" Montgomery (a former Carmelite nun); brothers, Richard, Harry and Robert "Bob" Montgomery. Survived by sons, Paul "J.R." and Steve, and their mother Shirley Montgomery; adored granddaughter, Elizabeth Heikkila and her newborn son, Jagger; brother, Donald (Donna) Montgomery; favorite niece, Marie Montgomery-Anderson and her three precious girls, Eve, Diana and Audrey; plus, over a dozen other nieces and nephews, including "The Wilkeses of Texas" and Don's eight children; and beloved former sister-in-law, Loly Montgomery-Hruska. Born in Minneapolis, he grew-up near Lake Harriet. Attended St. John's Prep School. Tall and athletic, he excelled in most sports, notably hockey. Honorably served in the U.S. Army. Earned English and Journalism degrees from the University of St. Thomas (at the time, the College of St. Thomas). Enjoyed boating, fishing and downhill skiing. A bright, brilliant and creative man, he worked for 3M and advertising firms Campbell Mithun and D'Arcy-MacManus before starting his own company. Lived in Bloomington for over 20-years prior to his "big move" to the small town of Prescott, Wisconsin ("Where the St. Criox and Mississippi Rivers meet"). Active in the local community for 35-years, he loved living in Prescott--and not just for the two rivers or whatever boat he had. Freedom Park, the Historical Society, Ptacek's Market, the city council, and more were all important to him. But nothing was more meaningful than all the friends he made over all the many years. And he had a vast and varied group of incredibly wonderful friends. Not just in Prescott, but everywhere. All meant the world to him. He will be remembered for his intelligence, wit and humor. And for being a great guy. Paul's final years brought a return to Bloomington as a resident of Martin Luther Care Center (MLCC). Heartfelt thanks and praise to all at MLCC for their truly exceptional and unwavering care. Visitation Wednesday, September 12 at 1:00 p.m., Gill Brothers Funeral Home, 5801 Lyndale Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55419. Catholic prayer service at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow. Private burial. www.gillbrothers.com
