Gretchen Calvit (Briese)
Calvit, Gretchen B. age 78 of Richfield, MN passed away on June 13. Gretchen Barbara Briese was a St. Paul girl, graduating from Central High in 1957 as valedictorian, then on to the University of Minnesota, from which she earned her BA in just three years. There she met David Calvit, and they soon married. Their son, Philip, arrived shortly thereafter, then daughters Susan and Anne. Gretchen and David traveled the world, leaving innumerable emptied plates in their wake, but their spiritual home was the beloved Farm in Wisconsin, where they entertained many hundreds of people over 25+ boisterous and delicious years. Gretchen could whisk up a sauce Béarnaise that would make her hero Julia proud. She loved art and pottery, collecting both, made quick work of crosswords and sudokus right until the end, was skilled at sewing and the fiber arts, swam beautifully, played in the St. Luke’s recorder ensemble and bell choir, and delighted in her grandchildren and grandpets. A one-in-a-million woman who will be missed by all. Preceded in death by her parents, Franklin and Dorothy; husband, David; and brother, Frank. Survived by children, Philip (Shannon Foulkes), Susan (Chris) Donnelly and Anne (Ian) Shillock; and grandchildren, Sam, Ben, George, Charlotte and Amanda. Funeral Service Saturday, June 23rd 1 PM at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church 4557 Colfax Ave. So. Minneapolis, MN. Interment St. Luke’s Memorial Garden. Memorials preferred to St. Luke’s Music Ministry, The Pines Senior Living, and Interact Center for the Visual and Performing Arts.
