Ziehl, Leona J. age 77 of Bloomington, MN passed away on June 4, 2018. Born to Albert E. and Jenne S. Smith at home in Lincoln, Minnesota on June 16, 1940.
She attended Lincoln school for grades 1-6; grades 7-12 in Staples, Minnesota. She graduated in 1958. She entered Mankato State College in the fall of 1958 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and Biology in August of 1961. In 1987 she received her master’s degree.
On September 12, 1959 she married Melvin A. Ziehl in Lincoln at the Lincoln Community Church. Following graduation from college, she taught one year in Lake Crystal, Minnesota; two years in Japan and three years in Bermuda.
Her son, Erich August Ziehl was born in Bermuda in 1966. Following a move to Illinois, her daughter, Gretchen Ann Ziehl was born on June 4, 1968.
Moving back to Minnesota to Lakeville, she returned to teaching in 1977 in Farmington. With a leave of absence, she went to Germany where she taught at Bitburg High School for three years. She retired from teaching in 1990.
Moving to Prior Lake area in 1995 she enjoyed her retirement years gardening, quilting, traveling, volunteering at church and most of all her family.
She was preceded by her parents, Albert and Jenne; husband, Melvin; son, Erich; sister, Amy and brothers, Roland, Rodney and Keith.
She is survived by her daughter Gretchen; son-in-law, David; granddaughter, Abby; grandson, Nathan; her daughter-in-law, Erin; grandson, Joshua; granddaughter, Morgan; brother, Allen and their spouses and children’s families.
Funeral service Thursday, June 7th 11 AM at Transfiguration Lutheran Church 11000 France Ave South Bloomington, MN. Visitation one hour prior to service at church. Reception to follow. Interment Bloomington Cemetery.
