Obituary for William Gary Lindsay

William (Bill) G. Lindsay, MD
Went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at age 83 on Monday, April 23, 2018, with his family at his side. Preceded in death by his parents Leroy and Bernice (nee Toole) Lindsay of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Survived by his wife of 52 years Jo-Ann (Percy) Lindsay; children, Kelly-Ann (Bill) Diehl, Christopher (Jeanne) Lindsay, Jonathan “J.” (Jane) Lindsay, Nancy (Gene) Flicek, and Jill (Ralph) McRae, and 15 beloved grandchildren.

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Bill or “Billy” as he was known then, loved all sports, especially hockey and golf, and went on to play both hockey and basketball with tremendous success at the University of Manitoba where he was inducted into the Halls of Fame for both sports. He completed medical school at the University of Manitoba then moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to complete his residency and fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Minnesota. He had a long and distinguished career in cardiac surgery in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Winnipeg. He was on the surgical team that completed the first successful heart transplant in Minnesota and was a co-founder of both the Minneapolis Heart Institute and the St. Paul Heart and Lung Surgical Division.

His love for his family and the people around him will always be remembered. Strong of spirit but kind and gentle; brilliant but humble; a man of integrity, good will, and simple faith. He lived a life of countless acts of generosity and service to others and lived each and every day to the fullest.
Special thanks to Michael Quinn, devoted friend, caregiver, and brother in Christ, for his tireless service. The family also gives thanks for the many talented medical staff and caregivers that cared for Bill during his illness.
