Obituary for Jerome "Bill" William DuPont

Jerome "Bill" William DuPont

“A Good Guy.” Jerome William “Bill” DuPont, age 89, died peacefully on November 9, 2017. Bill was born on May 22, 1928 in Glencoe, MN, the youngest of 7 children of Omar and Mathilda Donnay DuPont. He attended Guardian Angels High School in Chaska, MN where he met the love of his life and best friend of 64 years, Janice Welter DuPont. They married at St. Hubert’s Catholic Church in Chanhassen, MN on February 23, 1952 and eventually moved to Bloomington, MN where they raised their 6 children.

Bill and Jan’s marriage was a true love story to the end. He taught his kids the meaning of love and commitment by the way he loved and cared for Jan. He was a devoted and caring husband, father, grandfather and friend.

After high school, Bill enlisted with the US Army and served in Korea from 1946 to 1948. Upon his return from military service, Bill began a long career in information technology serving in various operational and managerial roles with Remington Rand, Sperry Rand and eventually Unisys.

Bill retired in 1989 and began his second and very important career as a volunteer and an amazing grandfather. He was a regular volunteer at Bridging where he worked in the electrical shop repairing anything he possibly could. He was a dedicated Grandpa and you could frequently find him at an ice rink, soccer field, baseball diamond, lacrosse field, children’s theatre, dance studio or anywhere one of his 16 grandkids were participating in an activity. Bill and Jan also enjoyed their retirement years socializing and traveling with their many friends and family.

Throughout his life, Bill was an avid learner, tinkerer and outdoorsman. He was a lifelong learner adapting to the ever-changing technical world, from the large mainframe computers he worked on, to texting his grandkids and following them on Twitter via his iPad. He was so handy, whether it was a construction project or a small engine repair, he had a remarkable ability to fix anything for which his kids were always thankful! He absolutely loved the outdoors. His lawn was always groomed to perfection and many of Bill’s favorite memories involved hunting and fishing trips with his friends and family.

Bill was an optimist who kept us laughing with his quick wit and great sense of humor. He kept us full with his love of sweets.

Bill was preceded in death by his soulmate, Jan, his parents, Omar and Mathilda DuPont, and his siblings, Joseph, Pearl, Elmer, Beatrice, and Cyril.

Bill is survived by his six children: Tom(Mary), Steve(Lori), Mark(Kate), Michelle(Scott) Johnson, Mike(Meghan), Pete(Mandy), his sixteen grandchildren, his sister, Gladys Lebens, and his brother-in-law, Jerry Welter. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who love him.

Special thanks to the loving caregivers at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, MN and NC Little Hospice of Edina, and his compassionate physician, Dr. Maggie McEvoy.

Bill was a good guy and a true gentleman. He taught us so much by the way he lived his life with honor, loving his wife, kids, grandkids and friends. He always worked hard and believed strongly in serving others, and through his actions left the world a better place. He will be greatly missed and forever loved.
