It is with sadness and great joy that we report the passing of Ronald Lawrence Schwerman who died Saturday night, October 28th at the Minneapolis Veterans Hospital.
Ron was born in Minneapolis and attended Vocational High School. He returned to VHS for post graduate training where he majored in Electronics.
He enlisted in the United States Air Force in April of 1963. His studies continued at Chanute Air Base specializing in Ground Power. Following his training he was sent to Viet Nam where he served until February 1967, when he was hit by a 140mm Russian rocket. He was an Honorably Discharged Airman 2nd Class on October, 1967.
Ron was “classified” by the USAF as 100% disabled. Despite missing two arms and one leg, Ron was able to maintain an active life-style which included traveling around the U.S. and Mexico, cruising to Alaska, the Caribbean, and Central America. He was an avid painter and enjoyed playing games, but his greatest passion was his Ham Radios.
Ron was a long-time resident of Bloomington, Minnesota. He is survived by his wife, Eydie Riggenbach Schwerman; daughter, Pamela (Mark) Yanish and grandsons, Joseph Buettner and Joshua Cheeseman; daughter, Rhonda (Mitchel) Zielske; stepdaughter Tara (Jon) Wentzel and grandchildren, Emma and Jonah; stepson, Tony (Jacque) Eggert and grandchildren, Devin, Reagan, and Roman. Preceded in death are parents, Lawrence C. Schwerman and Evelyn M. (Anderson) Schwerman; sister, Carol McKenny, and half-brother, Leroy Knutson.
Life-time member of American Military Retirees Association, Inc., The American Legion, Military Order of the Purple Heart and an active member of Disabled American Veterans where he served as 1st Jr. Vice Commander.
Funeral Service Wednesday, Nov. 08, 2017 at The Ft. Snelling Memorial Chapel, located at 1 Tower Ave, Minneapolis. Visitation at11:30 a.m.; Service at 12:30 p.m.; Interment will follow service at Ft. Snelling Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans and The VA Medical Center, to treat Veteran's with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
