Obituary for Harriet Eleanor Vorhes (Christensen)

Harriet Eleanor Vorhes (Christensen)
Harriet Eleanor “Chris” Vorhes, 93, shuffled off this mortal coil on October 5, 2017 after a brief illness. She was born January 23, 1924 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Harry and Irene Christensen. Harriet graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, and the University of Iowa as an RN. She met Carl Vorhes there, and they married on May 1, 1949. After Carl completed his training in St. Louis, Missouri, they moved to Sheldon, Iowa, where Harriet assisted running her husband’s medical practice. In 1977, they moved to the Twin Cities.

Chris was active in many civic and social organizations throughout her long life. Chris was a member of Holy Nativity Lutheran Church and was active in altar guild, circle and game nights where she often came home a winner. Chris was a Den mother, 4 H leader, girl scout leader and pretty much everything in between when her children were young. As an adult volunteer she helped develop a bike trail in New Hope, donated a bench to the Chrysalis Center, supported others at NAMI meetings, and made dinner for the “old” people at Elim Lutheran Church well into her 80s. Chris enjoyed playing contract bridge, baking, gardening, reading, learning, travel, Jeopardy, CNN and all types of new gadgets for the home. She got an I Pad at 86 and used it daily. She attended Minnesota Orchestra coffee concerts into her nineties. Pets were a big part of Harriet’s life. Her last animal companion was her beloved Manx cat Bonnie who preceded Harriet in death by a few months.

Surviving are her daughter, Anna Vorhes Sandberg of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, son, Joel Vorhes of Park Rapids, Minnesota, and daughter, Louise Vorhes of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, two beloved grandsons, Nathan Thomas Sandberg and Zane William Vorhes -Gripp and daughters-in-law, Laura Vorhes (Martin) and Joanne Brand Current (Frank). Also surviving are her brother, William Christensen (Ramona) Gretna, Nebraska, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Harriet’s parents, husband, Carl and two sons, Martin Vorhes and Frank Vorhes; and brother, Chet Christensen, precede her in death.
Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. October 21,2017, at Holy Nativity Church, 3900 Winnetka Ave. North in New Hope, Minnesota, with funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
