91 passed away quietly the morning of September 14 with her loving husband of 67 years, Fremont B. Gruss at her side.

Karen was born on March 21, 1926 in Lisbon, ND, the daughter of Gladys Lincoln Bartley and Julius Hillman.

Karen was a devoted Christian mother of three sons, Mark, Bradley (Teri) and Fremont II (Anne). She and Fremont are blessed with six grandchildren, Charles and Andrew, Daniel and Lauren (their mother Gigi) and Abbie and Fremont III.

Karen was a dedicated mother, serving as a Sunday school teacher, organized a Cub Scout Pack and was instrumental in founding a children’s safe playground in Bloomington, MN. She was a devoted, fun-loving grandmother to all of her grandchildren.

Karen and Fremont founded Fremont Industries, Inc. in 1954 in Bloomington, MN. Karen wore many managerial hats while she and Fremont grew the company into a national corporation.

Karen graduated from Lisbon High School and MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis where she studied piano and became a gifted pianist. She played the piano up until her last days. She enjoyed oil and watercolor painting. Throughout life she was proud of her Norwegian heritage and excelled at the art of Norwegian rosemaling.

In retirement Karen enjoyed organizing and directing the entertainment programs for multiple national reunions of Fremont’s WWII 97 Infantry Division, Company M.

Karen’s family and friends will always keep the memory of this loving, remarkable, talented, devoted Christian lady close in our hearts.

Funeral service will be Tuesday September 19th 11 AM at Gill Brothers Funeral Chapel, 5801 Lyndale Ave S, Minneapolis. Visitation 1 hour prior to service. Interment Oak Hill Cemetery.
